Siesta Key

Situated on the warm Gulf coast of Florida, Siesta Key is a barrier island over 7 miles long just west of Sarasota in Florida’s Cultural Coast. This unique gem of Florida coastline has been named one of “America’s Best Beaches“.  In fact, many consider Siesta Key one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with what is considered some of the best sand in Florida.  The white quartz sand in this island has an unusual sound when walked on (called “barking”) similiar to the shoreline along the Emerald Coast of Florida.  The comfortable beaches along this coastal area provides the opportunity to walk for miles without tiring.

This island is a popular destination to both locals and visitors alike, so it is likely that you will encounter a significant number of other beachgoers during your visit.  This area of Florida’s shoreline is more populated than some other Cultural Coast destinations and does not have the same reputation for naturalist activities.  The main parking area often draws a large crowd especially during busier periods and on the weekends.  Those willing to forego some of the amenities such as bathrooms or other facilities can often get to a bit more remote areas by heading North toward Siesta village and utilize the beachside parking areas available.

Other alternatives to the more developed Siesta Key Beach include following the beach road South to Crescent Beach with its beautiful white sand, or a little further to Point-Of-Rocks Beach which is a popular destination for snorkeling adventures.  Although the sand is often not as beautiful in the latter destination, the rocky outcrop provides abundant sea-life to observe and worth the trip.

Any way you go, a short hop off the Tamiami Trail to this Florida barrier island will provide an excursion well worth the time.
